“We Have an Answer”: A Story of Salvation

On Monday, January 13, 2020, heaven rejoiced as we gained another brother in Christ! Once a week, In His Steps Director, Reverend Bacon, travels to three area detention centers to minister to juvenile offenders who are in the pre-trial units. These young men wait in pre-trial units until they are able to go to juvenile court and receive their sentencing for their offenses. “From time to time, we do have kids who remain in these pre-trial units for up to 90 days. These opportunities allow us to build relationships with them,” Reverend Bacon says.

At a weekly Bible study in an area youth detention center last week, Reverend Bacon encountered a young man that he had met before at a previous Bible study. “I took some time to relate to him the first time, just to learn a little bit about him. It helped him feel more at ease with me the second time we met because he knew I was there to encourage him, not to demean him.” While this young man was quiet throughout the first Bible study, during the second one, Reverend Bacon made it a point to involve him in the lesson he was teaching. As they were going through the Four Spiritual Laws, Reverend Bacon had the young man read parts of the passage, a technique that helps in several aspects in the detention center ministry. First, it helps the young men remember what they’ve read more clearly. We believe that the Bible never returns void, and because of that, we know that in each of these young men’s lives these passages of scripture will return to their minds when they need it most. On this day, it also helped Reverend Bacon see that the young man was well-educated and could read proficiently. He says, “it allowed me an opportunity to encourage him that he was a very good reader. We try to encourage these kids in any way we can, including but never limited to evangelism. We want them to go back to school and go to college or a trade program. So I told him, “You’re a very intelligent young man, I can tell that. You shouldn’t be here, you should be back in school, getting ready for college.” This helped him know I was on his side.”

Reverend Bacon and the young man read through the Four Spiritual Laws, which explain first that all of us are loved by God, but that we all have sinned. Reverend Bacon mentions that he was careful to point out the “we” in those statements, “because often people go into the detention centers and only apply their lessons to the boys, as if those of us giving the Bible studies are without sin, so I always emphasize that I’m just as guilty of sin as they are.” The young man seemed to truly resonate with the first two points of the Four Spiritual Laws, and he began to let his guard down a little bit more. The third law emphasizes that Christ is the only provision for man’s sin. Not religion, not works. When they reached the end of the Four Spiritual Laws, Reverend Bacon stressed that each one of us must personally receive Jesus.

“I said to him, “Can you remember a time where you wanted to say to God, “I’m ready to give my life to you, and I want to receive Jesus Christ as my savior”? I gave him some time to think about this, and I could tell he was really thinking. We moved on to the prayer in the Four Spiritual Laws book that’s used to lead people to the Lord. I read this prayer to him and I could tell he was looking at it very intently as I read it, and after I read it, I asked him a simple question–

“Does this prayer speak to the desires of your heart?”

He said, “it does.”

So I said, “let me ask you another question, are you ready to receive Jesus as your personal savior today?”

And he said, “I am.”

Reverend Bacon confesses he was a little taken aback by the young man’s willingness to accept Christ right then and there, but he knew this was the Lord being faithful through His Word. He led the young man through the sinner’s prayer and then the young man prayed it himself, sincere in his faith. Reverend Bacon says, “I told him when he had finished praying that there’s nothing magical about this prayer. God looks at your heart, and he knows whether or not you believe with your whole heart. He seemed to understand and have a peace about him.”

As every believer knows, your walk with Christ truly begins after you accept Him into your life. In His Steps prioritizes follow-up with new believers. When we go into the detention centers, we always give new believers something with In His Steps’ name on it and contact information to get in touch with us when they’re released. Additionally, In His Steps does everything within our power to get them connected with a local church. Specifically with this young man, he will be serving time in the detention center on the weekends and during spring break so that he will be able to continue his high school education. While he is in the detention center, Reverend Bacon plans on making pastor’s visits to continue following up with him on what it means to live the Christian life.

So how can supporters of In His Steps help? Of course, we ask that you would pray that the seed that was planted takes root and that this young man would grow in Christ. We ask that you would pray for this one soul who received Christ on January 13th, 2020, and that he would come to understand more about the Christian life, devoting himself to learning more about his God. In a more general sense, we also ask that people would pray for In His Steps to have a more fruitful ministry in the detention centers. We are in the process of expanding with a dear friend and ministry partner who will be able to serve with the girls in detention centers, and we’re so excited for this opportunity!

As Reverend Bacon finished telling of this miracle of a young man coming to Christ, he said, “Here is a word from my heart: the Church, the body of Christ, needs to become a little more intentional about reaching young people. Like never before, our young people are under attack; there are temptations that are alluring these young people from as early as elementary school. I’m a firm believer that children have a sense of belonging, and if they don’t have that need fulfilled in their family and their church, they will look for it elsewhere. My heart’s desire is that the church would become more intentional about engaging the young people around them and making a personal impact on their lives. We have an answer; it’s our responsibility to share it with others.”

Community Outreach

“Demonstration and Proclamation:” Saw Mill Quarters Community Outreach

On September 28th, In His Steps hosted a Community Fun Day in the Saw Mill Quarters for all the families in the area to enjoy food, games, and a time of worship and speaking! In His Steps has had the joy of ministering to the Saw Mill Quarters of Canton for the past seventeen years, with the Community Fun Day occurring for the past five years. We’ve seen a steady number of people come every year, with around 60 people coming together Saturday to enjoy the hot September day.

The event held recreational activities to draw the younger crowd in like a blow up water slide, basketball, and lawn games, while the older ones appreciated sitting in the shade and visiting with neighbors and friends. During the event, In His Steps also hosted a prayer walk, going around the neighborhoods and passing out tracts and talking with those who would listen. So many people welcomed what was being offered, as “the majority of the people in the Quarters know us and they know what we stand for, and it was just exciting to see people being so receptive,” says Reverend Bacon.

A speaker from a local hip hop ministry offered a time of praise and prayer, and delivered a short message on John 10:9-10, highlighting that we as people must have the right identity and accept the One who can give us real life. After the time of worship, lunch was served, and In His Steps was so thankful to the members of the community who chose to give of their Saturday to help cook hamburgers for lunch. Reverend Bacon continues,  “I’m really excited about the fact that we’re getting the local people involved. As much as I enjoy outside volunteers serving with us, it means a lot to see the community stepping up to love their own place.”

The goal for the day was to strengthen In His Steps’ relationship with the people.  During the prayer walk, people often invited the staff and volunteers to share and pray with them; one of the keys to that receptiveness was that the gospel wasn’t pushed on anyone. Because In His Steps is deeply involved in the community already, being with them throughout the day strengthened those connections even further and allowed a space for the people to welcome In His Steps staff and volunteers into their lives.

When we allow ourselves to get in the midst of other people’s lives, when we sit in the trenches with them and shout glory from the mountaintops with them, that’s when the Spirit of God moves. It opens up more and more opportunities to proclaim His name to the unreached.

“We always hope that we’re given the opportunity to proclaim the gospel, and pretty much all we do here at In His Steps is ‘demonstration and proclamation’. We love on people because God loves us, that’s how we demonstrate the gospel. But we also proclaim it, believing that the word of the Lord does not return empty,” Reverend Bacon emphasizes. We believe fully in what 1 Corinthians 3:6 says, that some people are planters while God uses others to water. Because of this, we know that if we’re faithful with what He’s given us to do as a ministry, if we plant seeds, God will bring about the harvest.

One of the greatest blessings from the day came in the response of Damien Lewis, a Saw Mill Quarters resident who has become a huge part of In His Steps’ local ministry. He began recruiting people to help with the event and encouraging others to attend early in the month. At the event, Reverend Bacon notes that “when the speaker, who had a similar background to Damien, began giving the message you could see a spark in Damien’s eyes. The speaker was very transparent. For Damien and so many others like him to hear someone who’s now walking with Jesus and understands His forgiveness, I think it allows them to respond in a greater way.” The Sawmill Quarters has been known as a ‘challenged community,’ a place for vices like drugs, crime, and gangs. Some of the people who live in this community in Canton have experienced expensive mistakes, whether those mistakes cost them financially or emotionally.

In His Steps had the opportunity to speak into and build friendships with many of the people at the event who will in turn touch lives that we will never be able to touch. “Some of the people we spoke to are realizing now how fortunate they are, that they’re still living,” Reverend Bacon says. At In His Steps, we believe in the principle of disciples making disciples. We see this most clearly in Matthew 9, where Matthew encounters Jesus, trusts in him, and proceeds to invite all his tax collector friends to his house to meet Jesus as well. Jesus used Matthew’s unique position as a tax collector to reach other tax collectors, just as He will use the believers in the Saw Mill Quarters to reach their relatives and friends in the area.

As a follow up to the event, In His Steps is looking forward to several long term events that are currently in the works. “One of the things we want to do is a weekly father-son get together where the father’s take their sons to breakfast at McDonald’s and then come back to In His Steps where the sons can play and the fathers can have a Bible study together,” Reverend Bacon shares with excitement. Another long term goal is to help the young men in the area acquire driver’s licenses and provide job training so they are more prepared for what life looks like after high school and college.

There are so many needs that need to be met, and we are trusting that God will continue to provide for the people of Canton through In His Steps as He has in the past! We hope you will prayerfully consider joining with us financially and physically to impact the lives of those around us. “That Doesn’t Mean We Stay Down”: Salvation in the Detention Center

According to a 2010 census of the United States, close to 53,000 youth are living in facilities such as detention centers, residential treatment, adult prisons and jails and other justice centers. While this seems like a small number compared to the over 3 million people who currently live in the US, the fact remains that there are over fifty thousand children under the age of 18 who have faced criminal charges and are sentenced to live in a correctional facility.

To call this an epidemic would be an understatement.

Mississippi ranks third in the nation for the highest incarceration rate, with 624 people per every 100,000 behind bars somewhere. While our juvenile incarceration rate is the eighth lowest in the nation, many of our children grow up watching people they know and love go to jail. The example that is set for them is often tainted with blue flashing lights and handcuffs, so it isn’t any wonder that our youth often find themselves incarcerated in adulthood.

In His Steps continues to make an impact on this issue in the Canton community. With our Director, Reverend Bacon traveling to the local youth detention centers–Hinds, Rankin, and Yazoo Counties–to meet with the young men and women who are currently serving time there, we have been able to witness the Gospel working in places like this!

In late August, Reverend Bacon went to one of the area detention centers to meet with a small group of young men who had just been brought into the system for pre-trial. As he walked into the room, he was met with the faces of six youth staring back at him, waiting for what he would say. All of the young men were around 15 years old, many of them already jaded against the world.

Reverend Bacon knew 25 years ago when he began this ministry in the youth detention centers that this was a call placed on his heart by God, and “when God calls you, He prepares you,” he said, smiling. “I know He’s prepared me by giving me wisdom in knowing how to love them. When I walk into a room with a bunch of kids who are angry, hurt, and defensive towards everybody, I want them to know, ‘I’m here to encourage you.’”

The story he chose to share with the men was the one of Blind Bartimaeus found in Mark 10. Rev. Bacon showed them in the passage how Bartimaeus knew he had a problem–blindness, knew where he could find help for it–with Jesus, and knew he had to cry out to receive that help. This clear representation of salvation struck a chord with many of the young men listening, but what Reverend Bacon shared next drove home the message of Christ’s redemption even more.

“Even as Bartimaeus cried out for help, there was a cry of hindrance coming from the crowd following Jesus who tried to keep Bartimaeus from talking to Him,” Reverend Bacon told the boys. “We all have a spiritual blindness before we come to know Christ, and when we try to cry out to Him for salvation, there are going to be people who try to keep us down. But that doesn’t mean we stay down.

When Reverend Bacon offered the call to salvation for the young men, four of them came forward and identified with Christ that day. It was truly a joyful moment in that meeting room as four more of God’s children decided to come home to the Father! It is because of stories like this that we at In His Steps wholeheartedly believe that the gospel is alive and working in the youth detention centers in the Jackson metro area. Will you pray and serve alongside us as we continue in the good race the Lord has set before us?
