God reveals what is right and how to live for Him in His word. The Bible is our only source of guidance about how we should live and against false teachings. Jesus is our model for holding high God’s standards. Christians must give careful examination of everything to see if it measures up with God’s word. We should not accept things because of cultural norms or traditions. We must receive God’s Word as the final authority because we discover the truth in His word.
In our search for the truth, we must understand that the purpose of Scripture is to equip us to do good. The Bible tells us in 2 Timothy: 3:16-17 that all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness so that we may be equipped for every good work. Doctrine tells us what is right, reproof tells us what is not right, and instruction tell us how to get right.
How do we hold high God’s Word?
We must look to Jesus as the standard. Scripture reminds us that the Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us (I John 1:14). In Jesus’ life, we see how God thinks and therefore how we should think. Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5). Jesus was humble, willing to give up His rights in order to obey God and serve people. Like Christ, we should have a servant’s attitude, serving out of love for God and for others. Christ is the perfect model of what we are to become. He shows us how to live and gives us the power to live that way.
