Today, many Christians believe that there is no absolute enduring standard of living. However, God’s standard of living is revealed in the Bible. The Bible teaches us that all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Jesus gives us the model standard of living in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). These teachings instruct us how to live out our faith.
Why should we be unwavering about holding high God’s standards?
Scripture tells us that there will be terrible times in the last days; people will be lovers of themselves and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. They will have a form of godliness but denying its power (2 Timothy 3:1-5). Nowadays, it seems like righteousness is not a priority for many Christians. However, Jesus emphasizes “righteousness” and “purity of heart” in His teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. Romans 12:2 instructs us not to conform to the standards of this world, but let God transform us inwardly then we will be able to know the will of God – what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect. We as Christians are always called to be the salt and light of the world, as this is what God has commanded us to do (Matthew 5:13-16).
